Itinerary

Day 1Nyakalengija (1,600m) – John Matte Hut (3,420m)

Begin your journey at the Nyakalengija trailhead. After a briefing and meeting your guides, trek through the Afro-montane forest zone, encountering wildlife such as colobus monkeys and vibrant bird species. The trail takes you through bamboo forests and across the Mubuku River. Overnight at John Matte Hut near the Bujuku River.

Day 2John Matte Hut – Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

Cross the Bujuku River into the stunning Lower Bigo Bog, home to giant lobelias and everlasting flowers. Follow the boardwalk through the valley to reach Lake Bujuku, with awe-inspiring views of Mounts Baker, Stanley, and Speke. Arrive at Bujuku Hut for the night, with the sounds of nature surrounding you.

Day 3Bujuku Hut – Elena Hut (4,430m)

Climb through the Groundsel Gully and Scott-Elliot Pass, the highest point of the central circuit trail, offering sweeping views of the peaks. Continue to Elena Hut, your base for the summit attempt. Enjoy a hearty dinner in preparation for the challenging day ahead.

Day 4Elena Hut – Margherita Peak (5,109m) – Kitandara Hut (4,027m)

Start before dawn to tackle the ascent to Margherita Peak. Navigate glaciers and steep rocky paths to the summit. Take in breathtaking views from Africa’s third-highest peak before descending to Kitandara Hut, located near the twin Kitandara Lakes, for well-deserved rest.

Day 5Kitandara Hut – Guy Yeoman Hut (3,450m)

Trek through Freshfield Pass and descend into the Mubuku Valley. Pass moss-covered boulders, waterfalls, and unique vegetation zones. Guy Yeoman Hut offers an idyllic spot to relax and recount your day’s adventures.

Day 6Guy Yeoman Hut – Nyakalengija (1,600m)

Descend through the lush Afro-montane forest, encountering cascading waterfalls and diverse flora. Celebrate your achievement upon returning to Nyakalengija, where your adventure concludes.
